Tickets, the 2026 season, one-way rides, children, refunds and the viaduct. Ready to make your Jacobite Steam Train booking? The answers below settle most of what you need first.
One answer matters more than the rest: does your fare put you on the train? Some tours include a one-way ticket, some sell it as a dearer option, and some stop at the Glenfinnan Viaduct to watch the train cross. Every tour card says which. The Jacobite itself runs from Fort William to Mallaig and back, and the railway sells only returns.
Do Jacobite Steam Train tours include a ride on the train?
Some do. A tour marked as a ride includes a one-way Jacobite ticket, with the coach covering the other leg. A train-optional tour includes the ticket only if you book its dearer option, and a viewing tour stops at Glenfinnan to watch the train cross and never boards. Every card says which one you are buying.
Can I buy a one-way Jacobite ticket?
Not from West Coast Railways, which sells the Jacobite only as a same-day return from Fort William. A one-way ride comes inside a tour fare, where the coach meets the train at the other end and carries you on.
How much is a Jacobite Steam Train ticket in 2026?
An adult day return costs £76 in standard class and £116 in first class. A child of 16 or under pays £43 in standard and £76 in first. West Coast Railways adds a booking fee from £3.75.
When does the Jacobite Steam Train run in 2026?
The morning train runs every day from Monday 1 June to Friday 23 October 2026. The afternoon train runs every day from Wednesday 10 June to Friday 25 September 2026. There is no winter service.
What time does the Jacobite leave Fort William?
The morning train leaves Fort William at 10:15, reaches Mallaig at 12:25, leaves again at 14:10 and is back at 16:03. The afternoon train leaves at 12:50 and returns at 18:52.
Can I do the Jacobite Steam Train as a day trip from Edinburgh?
Yes. Day tours from Edinburgh run 12 to 14 hours, most with about three and a half hours on the road each way. Some ride the train one way, some sell the ride as an option, and some stop at the viaduct to watch it cross.
Is there a Jacobite tour from Glasgow?
The Glasgow departure is a private day for up to four people that collects you from your hotel and stops at the viaduct to watch the train cross. It does not board. The ScotRail train from Glasgow reaches Fort William after the morning Jacobite has left.
Is there a Jacobite tour from Inverness?
Yes. A 12.5-hour day includes a ticket from Fort William to Mallaig, and a three-day Isle of Skye tour includes the ticket and two nights in Portree. Both leave from Union Street in the centre of Inverness.
How long do tours spend at the Glenfinnan Viaduct?
It depends on the tour: from about 30 minutes to an hour and a half. The viewing tours give you the longest there, because watching the crossing is the point of their stop. No one publishes the minute the train crosses, so allow for waiting.
Is the Jacobite Steam Train always pulled by a steam engine?
No. At high fire risk, in an emergency or after a steam failure, West Coast Railways may run a heritage diesel instead, and says no refund is given for that. It can also suspend the service in extreme heat.
Can I cancel a Jacobite tour?
Most tours refund you in full if you cancel 24 hours ahead. Some need 14, 21 or 28 days' notice, and a Gray Line listing is non-refundable. Each card states its own policy.
Can children go on Jacobite tours?
Yes, from a minimum age each operator sets: 3, 4, 5 or 6 years depending on the tour. On the train a child of 16 or under travels on a child fare, and only with a paying adult. Expect a 12-hour day on the day tours.
Is the Jacobite wheelchair accessible?
Not fully. The heritage coaches cannot take a wheelchair into the seating area, and the doorways are narrow; a folding chair can be stored where there is room. Several tours accept a wheelchair with removable wheels if a companion helps you board.
Can I choose my seat on the Jacobite?
Not on a tour: West Coast Railways allocates standard-class seats to tour groups, and parties can be split. First class and a private table for two are bookable only when you buy direct.
Is lunch included on Jacobite tours?
No tour here includes lunch. Day tours stop in Fort William or Mallaig at lunchtime, and you buy your own; you can also bring food onto the train, which carries a buffet.
Can I book a Harry Potter compartment?
Not in 2026. West Coast Railways says its compartments cannot be booked until essential maintenance work is done. First class runs in open coaches with tables for two and four.
Do tours still serve a packed breakfast?
No. Gray Line says the light breakfast was removed from its tour in 2026, even though an older overview still mentions a packed breakfast. Eat before you board the coach.
Is the Jacobite the Hogwarts Express?
The Jacobite is the steam train that runs the real line over the Glenfinnan Viaduct, and it is the train people know as the Hogwarts Express from the films. On board it is a heritage train, not a themed set.
How long is the Jacobite route?
84 miles there and back, Fort William to Mallaig and return, on the West Highland Line. The morning train takes about two hours each way.
How long do you get in Mallaig?
One hour 45 minutes on the morning service, between the 12:25 arrival and the 14:10 departure. Tours that ride one way spend anything from an hour to two hours 15 minutes there.
Does the train stop at Glenfinnan?
Only if the timetable allows. West Coast Railways says the train may pause at Glenfinnan station and slows on the viaduct time permitting, and it promises neither.
Can I buy a Jacobite ticket on the day?
Sometimes. The guard may sell a small number of seats at Fort William station, cash only, first come first served, and it is never guaranteed. Book ahead if the date matters.
What are the refund terms if I book the train direct?
For a booking of ten seats or fewer: a full refund less £20 up to 14 days before travel, less £30 from seven to 13 days, and nothing within seven days. Each change costs a £15 admin fee.
Is first class on the Jacobite worth it?
It gives you an open coach with tables for two or four and free tea or coffee each way, for £40 more than standard. Tour tickets are standard class only, and first class needs at least two passengers.
Can I bring food on the train?
Yes, West Coast Railways lets you bring your own food, and there is a buffet car on board. Extras such as champagne must be ordered at least seven days ahead.
Which side of the train has the best views?
On a tour you cannot choose, because seats are allocated. Both sides see water and mountains on different stretches; ask your guide which way the viaduct curves so you are ready for it.
How early should I be at Fort William station?
At least 20 minutes before departure, to park and collect your tickets. Use the parking near the station, not the supermarket car park.
Do other trains cross the Glenfinnan Viaduct?
Yes. ScotRail service trains on the West Highland Line cross it every day, as well as the Jacobite in its season.
How much does parking cost at Glenfinnan?
£5 at the National Trust for Scotland car park, which fills. The Trust suggests arriving by bus or train when you can. Members park free.
Does the Jacobite run in winter?
No. The 2026 season ends on 23 October, and no 2027 dates were published at the time of writing. The private day from Glasgow still visits the viaduct from late October to March, when you may see a ScotRail train cross instead.
When is the best month to ride the Jacobite?
June to early October, while it runs. At the two nearest Met Office stations rainfall climbs from September, and June is the driest month of the season at both.
Are private Jacobite tours priced per person?
No: the private tours here are priced per group of up to four, so one fare covers your party. They collect you from your address and watch the train cross rather than riding it.
Do I need travel insurance for a Jacobite tour?
It is worth having. Several tours recommend it, and West Coast Railways recommends it for direct bookings, because a missed connection or a late train is not the operator's to refund.
