The one-way ride: Mallaig to Fort William
West Coast Railways sells the Jacobite only as a same-day return from Fort William. This tour gets you something you cannot buy from the railway: a one-way seat, boarding at Mallaig at the end of the line, with the coach waiting for you at Fort William. You spend your morning on the road instead of on a platform, and you ride the half of the line that ends with the famous crossing.
On the train you pass Morar and Arisaig, the most westerly mainland station in Britain, then the lochs and glens back towards Glenfinnan. The line then sweeps onto the Glenfinnan Viaduct, 21 arches curving about a hundred feet above the River Finnan, with Loch Shiel stretching away below. The timetable puts the Mallaig to Fort William leg at just under two hours. Looking for a Jacobite express tour that keeps you on the train rather than the roadside? This is the one to compare the others against.
Know what you are booking: this is first and foremost a bus tour with a steam train element. Most of your thirteen hours are on the coach. The ride is the centrepiece, not the whole day.
The west-coast road out, the Glen Coe road back
You leave Edinburgh over the Forth Bridge and head north through Fife and Perth. The road then runs west past the Glenfinnan Viaduct towards the coast, and the coach may stop there so you can see the arches from the ground. That stop depends on the day's parking, so treat it as a bonus rather than part of the plan.
After the train, the coach picks you up in Fort William and turns south. You cross Glen Coe and then the open wilderness of Rannoch Moor, with your guide filling in Scotland's past on the way. You are back in Edinburgh late in the evening.
What a one-way seat means for you
You ride one direction only, so the view is the view from your seat. You cannot pick a side of the train: West Coast Railways takes no requests for one, because its carriages often change direction before a trip. There is a buffet car on board, and you can bring your own food.

Meeting Highland Explorer in Edinburgh
The day starts at the Highland Explorer Tours departure point in Edinburgh. Your booking gives the exact start time and a map link. Arrive 15 minutes before departure, find the queue for your tour, and the staff check you in there.
There is no hotel pickup, so plan how you reach the departure point in the early morning. The tour ends back in the city late in the evening.
Know before you go
- It is a coach day. This is a bus tour with a steam train element; most of the day is on the road.
- The train can change. The Jacobite may be altered or cancelled at short notice, outside the tour's control.
- The viaduct stop is not promised. The coach stops at Glenfinnan only if parking allows.
