A Jacobite ticket costs £76 in standard class. That is the one price everyone quotes, and it is only the start. This guide sets out every 2026 fare, the fees on top, and what the tours charge when the ticket is in the fare, when it is an option, and when you only watch. What does a Jacobite ticket cost in 2026?

West Coast Railways published its 2026 fares in December 2025. Every ticket is a same-day return from Fort William to Mallaig and back.

First class needs at least two passengers, so a single traveller rides standard. The season dates and the timetable are on the 2026 Jacobite season page.

Is first class worth £40 more?

It depends on what you want from the day. First class gives you an open coach with tables for two or four, more legroom and a free tea or coffee each way. Standard seats you at tables for four, with the same windows and the same view.

For a couple, the private table for two at £252 is £20 more than two first-class returns, and the table is yours alone. The coaches and classes are described in what to expect on board.

What does a child pay?

A child of 16 or under pays £43 in standard and £76 in first class, and travels only with a paying adult. A family of two adults and two children pays £238 in standard, before the booking fee.

Tours set their own minimum ages, from three to six. On the tour fares a child usually pays the same as an adult, so check the booking page for your party.

Which fees come on top?

Three small ones, and one that depends on your plan.

  • Booking fee: at least £3.75 on every direct booking.
  • Amendment fee: £15 each time you change a booking, up to 14 days before you travel.
  • Extras: gifts such as champagne must be ordered at least seven days ahead.
  • Glenfinnan: if you drive there to watch the train, the car park costs £5.

What do the extras on board cost?

West Coast Railways sells a few gifts that are set out at your table, on any Jacobite trip, morning or afternoon, in either direction. You add them when you book, or later on 0333 996 6720, and at least seven days before you travel.

  • Champagne: £33.99 a bottle.
  • Chocolates: £21.99 in a commemorative box.
  • Flowers: £45 a bouquet.
  • Whisky: £22.99 for four Ben Nevis miniatures. No alcohol is served to anyone under 18.
  • Souvenir guide: £2 for an eight-page booklet on the route, with a postcard.

Every gift comes with a card for your message. If you ride on a tour, ask your operator before you travel whether extras can be added to its seats.

What does it cost to watch at Glenfinnan on your own?

If you drive to Glenfinnan yourself, the National Trust for Scotland charges for its car park and for entry to the visitor centre and the Glenfinnan Monument. The viewpoint path is there for the train; the exhibition and the tower climb are what the ticket buys.

A family of four arriving by car pays £18 for entry and parking. Members of the Trust enter free. The car park fills in summer, so the Trust suggests arriving by bus or train when you can.

What does a tour with the ticket cost?

A day tour that rides the train costs $261 a person, from Edinburgh or from Inverness. That fare buys a one-way ticket, a coach for the other leg and a guide. It does not buy lunch: no tour here includes it.

Tour prices are set by each operator and change with the date. The ride day from Edinburgh is the one to compare against a direct ticket, because it includes the ride.

What does "from $78" mean on a train-optional tour?

It means the coach day without the train. The Gray Line days start at $78 and $79, and at that price you do not board. The option that adds a Jacobite ticket costs more, and the booking page shows its price once you select it.

So a train-optional fare and a ride-day fare are not the same thing. Compare the option price with $261 before you decide which is the better deal. The Gray Line day from George IV Bridge is non-refundable, so be sure before you pay.

What is the cheapest way to see the train?

Watch it cross the viaduct. The viaduct day from Charlotte Square costs $60 a person, with 90 minutes at Glenfinnan and Glen Coe on the way. The Castle Terrace day costs $75 and includes entry to the visitor centre.

How do private prices work?

The private days are priced per group of up to four, not per person. They cost from $901 to $1,063, collect you from your address and give you 90 minutes at the viaduct. None of them boards the train.

For a full car of four, that works out at $225 to $265 each. For two, it is $450 to $531 each, and a shared viaduct day is far cheaper.

How do refund windows compare?

The fare is only half the price. The other half is what you lose if your plans change.

The strictest windows sit on the trips with nights and on the Gray Line coach days. If your dates may move, a day tour with 24 hours' notice keeps the most options open.
